Tourist attraction Statue of Liberty taking a year off
After celebrating its 125th anniversary celebration, the US’s Statue of Liberty in New York City is taking a year off.
The National Park Service said the statue that is widely viewed by tourists will remain open during its year-long, US$27.25 million renovation.
About 3.5 million people visit Liberty Island every year.
Tours of Lady Liberty invite visitors for an in inside look but only a few hundred can be accommodated a daily, says the Park Service.
Among the improvements to the lady are new elevators and stairways and rehabbed restrooms. Visitors will still be able to take the ferry to the island.
The United States received the statue from France.
It was dedicated Oct. 28, 1886, with President Grover Cleveland among on-lookers.
