Tourist narrowly avoids death by selfie at Mount Vesuvius
An American tourist had to be rescued after falling into the crater of Mount Vesuvius
He was trying to retrieve his phone which fell into the crater while taking selfies at the summit.
He fell into the mouth of the volcano and had to be rescued by local guides who abseiled into the crater.
He suffered minor injuries.
Local media said the tourist and three others had reached the summit by taking a route closed to the public and could face charges.
Mount Vesuvius in Italy is regarded by experts to be one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world, with a population of about 600,000 living within its danger zone.
Vesuvius iss the only volcano on the European mainland to have erupted in the past 100 years, in 1913.
The volcano’s crater easures 450 metres diametre and drops to a depth of 300 metres.
