Tourist yobs in the spotlight again
Newspaper reports crackdown on Brits behaving badly
“All-out War on British Yobs”, screams the front page of Tuesday’s Daily Express. The newspaper reports that extra police have been drafted into resorts “from Tenerife to Cyprus” to deal with drunken holidaymakers who disgrace themselves while abroad.
The BBC website also reports that police in Faliraki are to ban street drinking and organised pub crawls to curb the rowdy behaviour of holidaymakers.
Keith Betton, of ABTA, told News From Abroad that while the behaviour of some tourists in resorts such as Faliraki was less than exemplary, the situation was less than clear-cut: “We certainly do not want to see UK holidaymakers or reps breaking the law, but it is clear that in Greece at least the laws are poorly understood by all concerned.
“The bar owners are Greeks, the club owners are Greeks, and this is essentially a Greek travel product – but UK travellers are being penalised for buying it. There needs to be dialogue between the industry and the Greek government at the highest level.”
