Training People – a short story
Today we begin a series of articles with training and staff selection as their theme. We trust you will find them interesting and informative.
Bev Brightspark set off for work looking forward to another challenging day at Brilliant Travel, a small agency she owned opened with her business partner Pip Patina. Bev loved everything about her job – she loved the fact that it was her business rather than someone else’s. She loved that she and Pip had come up with a model for how the business would run, and the model seemed to be working well. They were well on their way to becoming the most successful agency in the area – who knows, it might not be long before their dream of winning ‘Travel Agency of the Year’ became reality.
As Bev drove to work, she reflected on the hard work she and Pip had put in over the past couple of years. One thing they’d both been very clear on when they bought over the agency was that they should have a business plan and model that reflected current best practice in all areas. That meant that she and Pip had to work on rather than in the business; her new staff didn’t necessarily have to have experience in the industry – both Pip and Bev believed it better to hire the right attitude and train up.
As Bev thought about all the hard work attached to training up staff, she suddenly remembered that she had a new employee starting today – Mandy Marvel was joining her from Run of the Mill Travel, an agency that pretty much reflected its name. Mandy, though, seemed to be a motivated, positive type of person and, with her 12-months experience in the industry, she should have a good basic knowledge of how things worked.
Nevertheless, Mandy would spend the first few days on an induction program that had been designed for Brilliant Travel.
As Bev walked towards the shop, she saw Mandy waiting outside already, even though it was well before opening time.
‘So I chose the right person’ thought Bev. ‘What commitment….
Did Bev choose the right person – find out next time…
