Travel firms urged to join Visa, Mastercard lawsuit
A class action lawsuit against Visa and Mastercard on behalf of a large number of claimants launched recently .
Speaking to TravelMole’s Graham McKenzie, Steve Allen and Jeremy Robinson of legal firm Harcus Parker explained the background to the legal challenge.
They say the travel industry has been affected more than most other sectors.
According to Robinson, Visa and MasterCard forced banks into anti-competitive deals, which is ‘simply unlawful.’
Essentially, banks were told they must accept interchange fees set by Visa and Mastercard.
Inevitably, banks pass on these charges to their business customers, including many travel firms.
It’s ‘particularly acute for corporate card payments and cards used by overseas visitors,’ Robinson explained.
In addition, Allen says the cost of using these cards is disproportionally higher within the travel sector.
Harcus Parker extended an invitation for travel businesses to join the class action.
