Travel industry welcomes new golf society ‘with balls’
TAGS, the Travel Alternative Golf Society, held its inaugural meeting at Hanbury Manor, Hertfordshire, this week.
The group, which calls itself the ‘golf society with balls’, is designed to be a fun alternative for those in the travel trade.
Founder member Giles Harper explained: “We are trying to create a very open fun society for golf with a regular event calendar.
“The emphasis will be on fun and competition, without the pomp and circumstance associated with other travel golf societies.â€
The not-for-profit society is exclusively for people working within or serving the UK travel sector.
At the first event, over 40 golfers, male and female, competed in over 18 holes of a tough parkland.
All members sported golf shirts sponsored by Teletext Holidays, whose managing director Matt Cheevers is a TAGS founder member.
The overall winner of the day, with 36 Stableford points, was Tom Knopeck, UK managing director for Dollar Thrifty.
The longest drive was by Angus Chisholm, managing director of C&M Group, while ‘nearest the pin’ was Frank Docherty, sales director of Traveltek.
The team prize was won by Harper, Knopeck, Chris Lee, head of the travel sector at Barclays, and Mark Riddle, retail sales manager of Newmarket Air Holidays.
Prizes were donated by Mondial Assistance.
