Travellers seize the moment

Holidaymakers are booking more spontaneously due to mobile phone technology.

Research by lastminute.com showed that 59% of respondents booked hotels and flights on a mobile app or mobile website less than a week before their departure date.

One in five – 19% – book on the day of travel.

lastminute.com says its data confirms this with a third of bookings for Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights being made between the hours of 6pm and midnight that day.

Of the 2,000 questioned in the survey by OnePOll, 3 in 5 stated they were willing to change plans on a night out to stick with the group.

A quarter of same night hotel bookings take place at a luxurious hotel in home cities with many saying they are escaping the mess at home or treating themselves to some last minute luxury.

Matthew Crummack, CEO of lastminute.com said: "This is only the start, but mobile is already completely changing the way we plan our leisure time – I believe more than the internet did before."
