Travelling with pets is on longer a dog’s life!
NRMA Head of Travel & Touring Michael Leary said that NRMA’s new “Holidaying with Dogs” includes many tips for happy and safe car travel with the family dog as well as an impressive range of dogfriendly accommodation throughout Australia.
“Planning is critical to a happy, healthy holiday with your pet,” Mr Leary said, adding, “Holidaying with Dogs is a great value-add for members and opens up a world of possibilities that families can explore when thinking about their summer holidays.”
“NRMA also has a Travelling with Pets guide available to make travelling with cats, dogs and horses easy and stress-free, with “Travelling with Pets featuring more than 180 ‘pet friendly’ accommodation properties ranging from boutique inner-city hotels to boarding kennels and catteries.
“It also includes a range of tips and handy hints including information on what to do when things go wrong.”
The NRMA recommends that pet owners:
Never leave a pet alone in a parked car even on an overcast day with the windows down. Cars that are parked rapidly rise in temperature and once the animal reaches 42 degrees Celsius it can be disastrous even if you get them to a vet.
Ensure all pets are secured safely in the vehicle. They can become quite lethal if thrown around in an accident.
Never let an animal stick its head out of the window.
Obey the two hour rule and let your dog out of the car for a break to walk around.
Ensure pets wear a collar and identification tag and are micro-chipped.
If possible, keep a digital photo of your pet on a computer to email to animal shelters in the area should your pet get lost.
Mr Leary said members could save money by using the guides to take their pet with them on holidays rather than pay to have it looked after in kennels while they were away.
