TravelMole announces Web Awards shortlist
Shortlists have been drawn up for TravelMole’s 2004 web awards, following a record number of nominations.
There are four websites eligible for the top spot in each category, whittled down by our team of judges headed by Liz Craig. Liz is president and chief executive of Oneglobe Network, and together with a team of Travel & Tourism MBA students in Paris, sifted through all the nominations.
In two categories – hotels and tourism boards, the shortlist has exceeded four because the standard of websites nominated was so high.
On the subject of the tourist board nominations, Ms Craig says it was a tough category to judge due to the quality of websites. She said many of them were well presented, such as the Bournemouth site, which she said would “inspire travel”, or the Kent tourism website, which she said had some useful interactive video features and a good downloadable brochure.
In the online agency category there are some familiar names like Travelocity, which scored highly on clarity, information and ease of use; it is alongside lesser-known websites like Experience New Zealand, which got points for its exhaustive detail and organisation into three key travel categories.
The responsible tourism category was hotly contended, and among those that were highlighted for excellence were Ecoclub.com, for its community content and Greenstop.com for its comprehensive content. This category will be of particular interest at the awards ceremony as it is taking place in conjunction with TravelMole’s Fast Conference, which tackles the issue of responsible tourism.
The hotels category has a record six on the shortlist including Cotswold House, which received merit for its personal touches and the fact that it gave a real feel for the property, and the YHA website, which was described as: “Fun, funky and colouful; easy to use with clear information in a friendly language.”

It is now up to a separate panel of judges to find a winner in each category. Final judging will be completed by May 6 and the winners will be presented with their awards on May 11 at The Sheraton Park Tower in London, in conjunction with TravelMole’s Fast Conference, entitled, “Can mass tourism be responsible tourism”?
The web awards presentation will be available for viewing on streaming video on May 12. Keep an eye on the Awards homepage for details.
