Troubled carrier Mihin Lanka finally closes down

Friday, 07 Nov, 2016 0
Sri Lankan low-cost carrier Mihin Lanka has finally ceased trading.

The company has been in financial difficulties for a long time and the Sri Lankan government announced it would be wound up several months ago.

Its routes have been taken over national carrier SriLankan Airlines.

Since forming nearly a decade ago, Mihin never made a profit, serving mostly Sri Lanka and India-Gulf routes with Airbus A320 jets.

"All routes in Mihin Lanka’s route network will now be serviced by SriLankan Airlines, thus marking a new beginning for the national carrier and building a strong, efficient and competitive airline that will be a force to be reckoned with in the region," a Mihin Lanka and SriLankan Airlines joint statement said.

About half of Mihin Lanka’s 300 employees have been redeployed with the national carrier so far and the remainder who do not transfer by the end of the year will be offered severance packages.
