TSA reports new single day record for seized firearms at airports
The single-day record for the most firearms seized at airports was broken yet again on May 3, the Transportation Security Administration said.
It discovered 26 firearms at 15 airports around the country, with 21 of these loaded.
That sparked the all-too regular reminder from the agency for forgetful fliers to make sure they check carry-on bags before leaving home.
"Each time we find a dangerous item, the line is slowed down and a passenger that likely had no ill intent ends up with a citation or in some cases is even arrested," it said on the TSA blog.
"This is a friendly reminder to please leave these items at home."
It contributed to 90 seizures of firearms during the first week of May, of which 73 were loaded.
Nearly half of these had a round chambered.
Civil penalties of more than $13,000 can be applied for prohibited items violations.
Along with regular finds of replica firearms, and pellet guns, brass knuckles, ammunition, stun guns and pocket knives, TSA screeners also seized inert grenades.
"We don’t know if replica or inert items are live until our explosives professionals take a closer look and eventually open the bag. That takes time and slows down the line. It can even lead to a complete shutdown and evacuation," it said.
