TUI confirms talks for two new Marella ships
TUI Group is set to boost its cruise ship fleet again.
During the TUI Capital Markets Day, it told shareholders discussions for two new ships are underway.
“Given the ageing Marella Cruises fleet, we are currently exploring future options on positioning our highly profitable UK market leading business, including re-fleeting,” it said.
A proposed two new ships would be targeted at the UK market.
However, CEO Sebastian Ebel said there are no available slots for b=new ships in European yards for several years.
“There is one thing that keeps us awake, that is the age of the fleet because there are only three shipyards in Europe, and they are fully booked out for the next five to 10 years.”
“We are in discussions with shipyards and we are currently considering ordering two vessels based on a design customised for the UK market.”
Newbuild slots would likely be available from 2031.
“In parallel we continue to explore partnership options for Marella Cruises.”
TUI expects earnings before tax to be up about 10%.
The company wants to boost sales via its mobile app, which accounts for about 12% of UK bookings.
This is well behind online web bookings which represents more than half of all TUI bookings.
“TUI continues to grow. Our integrated business model is the basis for a stronger global presence,” Ebel added.
