TUI issues advisory after Rhodes rocked by earthquake
Earthquakes rocked western Turkey and the Greek Islands, with one person dead and dozens injured.
The 5.8-magnitude quake jolted the Turkish resort town of Marmaris and a more powerful one hit the island of Rhodes.
The epicenter was about 23km north of Rhodes, where tourists said they were woken up to violent shaking, although no injuries were reported there.
Travel company TUI issued an advisory but urged tourists to ‘remain calm.’
“At this time, there are no reports of significant damage. Follow any safety instructions provided by your accommodation or local officials.”
There has been a series of low magnitude aftershocks in the hours since.
Greek seismologist Efthimios Lekkas said: “It will not have a significant impact on the surface, there will be no tsunami, and above all, there will not be a rich aftershock sequence.”
“There will not be any major damage” in Rhodes, he said.
