Two holidaymakers killed and others injured in Hurghada knife attack
Two holidaymakers have been killed and four others injured in a knife attack in the Red Sea resort of Hurghada on Friday.
The incident began at the Zahabia hotel and then it is believed the attacker swam to the Sunny Days El Palacio resort and stabbed more tourists.
The deceased were German nationals and all the victims are women.
Egyptian officials say a man has been arrested and is being questioned by police to establish his motive.
A spokesman for Thomas Cook, which has customers in Hurghada, said: "Thomas Cook is aware of a knife attack that has taken place on the beach in Hurghada in Egypt. We are working with our team on the ground to gather further information. At this stage there is no indication that any British tourists are involved."
The spokesman added that the Sunny Days El Palacio hotel is not a property featured by Thomas Cook. The nearest property that Thomas Cook sells is around 1 km away.
Thomson and First Choice issued a statement which said: "We’re aware of the terrible events that took place today in Hurghada and can confirm that none of our customers were affected."
The UK Foreign Office advised any tourists in the area to follow the advice of the local authorities and their travel company.
The incident is another major blow to Egypt’s tourism, which has already suffered significantly since the UK Government suspended all flights to and from Sharm el Sheikh in 2015 after a Russian holiday jet was blown up shortly taking off from the resort’s airport.
