Fears of a campaign against tourists in Egypt were raised yesterday when an explosion killed at least two people and injured scores more in an outdoor bazaar in Cairo.
The attack, which is believed to have been aimed at killing and injuring foreigners, took place near the al-Azhar mosque; according to The Independent, witnesses say a man on a motorcycle set the bomb off in the middle of a group of foreigners.
As well as 10 Egyptians, the injured include two Americans, two Turks, two Italians, two French travellers and one Briton. The two people confirmed dead are reported to be a French woman and an American man.
The Independent reports that the attack in the first on tourists in Cairo in the last seven years, but suggests that, following the attack, “fears of a new wave of terrorism are bound to grip the capital once more”.
