Uganda at ITB
Uganda offers visitors a rare opportunity to explore some of Africa’s most exciting wildlife and dramatic scenery. The visitor to this friendly country can explore its hidden treasures in relative solitude and with a real sense of adventure.
The country has 10 full national parks and 12 wildlife reserves which show an unbelievable range of biodiversity. From the snow-capped ‘Mountains of the Moon’ thought in Roman times to be the source of the Nile, to the amazing Queen Elizabeth Park, home of the tree-climbing lions – Uganda is a treasure trove.
New trails are constantly being opened including surreal walks up the Rwenzori mountains, where one may see the effects of Afro-Alpine gigantism. The effect of the sun and altitude growing giant flowers and plants – including lobelias metres tall.
But 2009 is the ‘Year of the Gorilla’ and there is nowhere better to see the few mountain gorillas still extant than in the aptly-named ‘Bwindi Impenetrable Forest’. Now a World Heritage Site.
The Uganda Wildlife Authority have recently habituated two more gorilla groups in the forest so that visitors may see these gentle giants in their natural habitat.
This has increased the number of permits available each day by 50% to 48, giving more visitors a great opportunity to view these magnificent creatures at close quarters in their natural habitat.
Other major attractions in Uganda are:
• The highest number of recorded species of birds in Africa with over 1040 different species.
• The highest mountain range in Africa – the Rwenzoris – legendary snow-covered peaks straddling the equator.
• The highest number of primate species in any country of the world.
• Unique water attractions including white-water rafting at the Murchison Falls National Park
• Safari experiences in at least four major national parks.
