UK cruise revenues rise to £1.34 billion
The UK ocean cruise market grew revenue by 8% last year to £1.34 billion over 2004, new research shows.
The Annual Cruise Holiday Market Digest by market research consultancy IRN Research says the sector showed resilience despite the withdrawal of Airtours Sun Cruises, which represented 14% volume share of the market in 2004.
This was against a background of a 3% contraction in the outbound package holiday market as cruising increased its market share from 5.2% to 5.6%.
There were only four new ships launched in 2005 compared with an average of 10 a year over the last 15, according to IRN. Nevertheless, substantial additional capacity from P&O Cruises, Princess Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean International, Saga and Thomson pushed the growth of the UK market.
With additional capacity in 2006, the market is expected to grow to 1.25 million passengers compared with the record breaking 1.07 million in 2005.
