The UK is currently the seventh most expensive place to stay in Europe, according to a hotel price comparison website.
Rates have risen 9% this month in the UK, with a one night stay now averagely costing £99, says price comparison site trivago.co.uk
But prices have also shot up in many other European cities, particularly the ones with mild winters and Christmas markets. The European average has risen from £86 to £90 this December.
Those cities with seasonal festive markets experienced particularly strong growth. London saw a 17% rise this month to £156, Brussels saw a 27% rise to £99 and Vienna 14% to £108.
Andalusia in Spain also experienced a seasonal surge, thanks to its pleasant climate. Seville nightly accommodation costs went up 38% to £90 and Grenada rose 50% to £87.
