UK nears agreement with EU on vaccine passports
A deal on mutual Covid passport recognition between the UK and the EU is nearing completion, increasing the prospect of a relatively ‘normal’ summer for travel, at least for vaccinated Britons.
It emerged that talks are well advanced on recognising the NHS app as a compliant vaccine passport across the EU.
It would allow border control officers to read a QR code to confirm vaccination status.
"There are talks ongoing at the technical level which are progressing well and going in the right direction. This is particularly because the technical system architecture of the EU and the UK are aligned," a EU spokesperson said.
"It’s good that the UK is now working with us towards that goal."
A spokesperson from the UK side said: it wants to ensure ‘certification is introduced in a way that works for everyone.’
Due to the prevalence of the Delta strain in the UK, France and Germany have sought EU-wide support to enforce quarantine of travellers from the UK but has had a mixed reaction.
Latest data shows that nearly 62% of UK adults are now fully vaccinated and almost 85% have received at least one jab.
