The Dorset resorts of Bournemouth and Poole have combined resources for the first time to launch a recession-busting “Back in Britain” campaign to publicise the best-value holidays in the UK.
The initial push covers an electronic media and poster campaign in the Midlands and London from March 25 to April 5 in advance of the Easter holidays.
Bruce Grant-Braham, chairman of Poole Tourism Management Board, said: “The collapse of sterling’s value against both the euro and the dollar is forcing many people to re-think their holiday habits, and together we aim to be the first to welcome them back from the costly Costas.”
Alex Carter, chair of Bournemouth Tourism Management Board said: “Having enjoyed huge success individually, we are now joining forces to offer an even better, unrivalled range of holiday experiences at unbeatable prices.
“Between them, Bournemouth and Poole attract some seven million visitors a year, many of whom return time after time.
“With the credit crunch rekindling interest in ‘holidays at home’, we will be extending a welcome to many more holiday makers this summer.”
Although they are near neighbours, Bournemouth and Poole have never worked together before, but Bruce Grant-Braham is confident that the new partnership will give holidaymakers even more to look forward to.
“The two towns complement each other perfectly,” he said. “Historic Poole, with its upscale hotels and restaurants, its marinas, and the renowned Sandbanks peninsula, is a perfect counterpoint to family-orientated Bournemouth, with its glorious beach, beautiful gardens, and countless watersports opportunities.”
Between them, Bournemouth and Poole offer:
- 10 miles of sands, including Sandbanks
- More than 500 hotels, guesthouses and bed-and-breakfast establishments, ranging from £20 to £200
- In excess of 400 restaurants, cafes and tea-rooms
- Marina berths for 1,500 boats
- Live music venues, theatres and concert halls, complimented by museums and galleries
- Eight golf courses, 7 leisure centres, 2 piers
- Europe’s largest natural harbour – Poole
