UKinbound hails financial aid for Scotland tourism sector

UKinbound welcomed the ‘vital lifeline’ for Scotland’s inbound tourism industry after the Scottish Government finalised a financial package worth up to £9 million.

The funding will help mitigate the ‘severe economic impact’ caused by the Omicron variant, Tourism Minister Ivan McKee said.

It is ‘clearly an especially tough winter period’ McKee said.

VisitScotland will distribute the cash to businesses ‘as quickly as possible.’

The money includes £6m from the £375m business support package already announced and £3m from the Tourism Recovery Programme.

Joss Croft, CEO, UKinbound said "We’re very pleased that the Scottish Government has recognised the devastating impact Omicron is having on the tourism industry and its supply chain, and is rolling out an additional financial package."

"In stark contrast, Westminster continues to leave the inbound tourism industry out in the cold, ignoring the crippling impact of international restrictions on inbound tour operators,"

"This threatens the recovery of the UK’s fifth largest export industry."

The funds will be shared among Scottish coach operators, day tour providers, hostels, inbound tour operators and visitor attractions.
