Ukraine protests ‘may turn violent’
The Foreign Office has warned tourists that protests in Ukraine ‘may turn violent’ after calls for the President to resign.
Ukrainian opposition leaders called for President Viktor Yanukovich and his government to resign at a rally of about 350,000 people.
The President is accused of a U-turn on a proposed deal with the EU in favour of trade with Moscow, Ukraine’s former Soviet master.
Protesters broke into Kiev’s City Hall during the demonstrations and police said 100 officers had been injured in violence, news agencies reported.
The FCO said some protests have resulted in scuffles, including clashes at the event on Independence Square in Kyiv in the early hours of 30 November.
It said: "Pay close attention to your personal security and monitor the media for information about possible safety or security risks.
"You should avoid demonstrations and public gatherings, as even peaceful protests may turn violent.
