United Airlines offers flight waivers as super typhoon nears Guam and Saipan
United Airlines has issued flight change waivers for Guam and Saipan as Tropical Storm Hagibis strengthens to a super typhoon in the Pacific.
United says change fees and any difference in fare will be waived for new flights departing on or before October 10, 2019 in the same class of travel.
By late Monday Hagibis was within 150 miles of Saipan and generating gusts up to 185 mph.
It strengthened wind speeds by 100 mph in just 24 hours.
The Weather Channel called this escalation the ‘most explosive rapid intensifications of any tropical cyclone on record anywhere on Earth.’
It is now a category 5 storm, with warnings issued for the islands of Saipan, Tinian, Alamagan, and Pagan.
Acting Gov. Arnold I. Palacios has sought federal funds from the US government, although latest projections expect the storm to skirt just past the Marianas.
Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero also placed Guam on alert.
As well as the United flights cancelled, services by Jeju Air and Philippines Airlines were also grounded.
