United Airlines to resume India flights in September

Saturday, 18 Jul, 2019 0

United has quickly reversed its decision to extend the suspension of daily non-stop services to India.

Earlier this week, it announced it would extend the suspension until October 26 but has now brought the restart forward to early September after Pakistan reopened its airspace.

It will resume daily non-stop service between New York/Newark and Delhi and Mumbai on September 6.

United’s Delhi service had been halted since April when Pakistan closed its airspace after cross border conflict with India.

Then the Mumbai flight was grounded in June after the US imposed flying restrictions over Iran.

"After reviewing and re-evaluating plans, our network operations and planning teams have determined that we will resume daily non-stop service between New York/Newark and Delhi and Mumbai on September 6, 2019," United said.

It is also launching a new route between San Francisco and Delhi in December.

United said it plans to reach out to customers who may have either cancelled or rescheduled travel in the past 24 hours to offer new booking options.

"We are excited to get back to connecting our customers and employees between the US and India."

Pakistan airspace had been closed for four months causing major financial losses to Air India which had continued to operate India-US service but with up to two hours extra flying time due to having to use less direct flight paths.

India’s aviation ministry said the national flag carrier had lost about $70 million due to extra fuel costs and cabin crew cover.
