United cuts Australian jobs
United Airlines passengers in Australia could face disruptions today because of industrial action.
The airline’s employees could walk off the job in response to the American carrier’s decision to shed some 100 jobs in Sydney and Melbourne, their union warned.
United’s Australasian general manager Stephen Pearce said the measure would build an efficient, consistent and cost-effective organisation.
Australian Service Union (ASU) spokesman Michael Flinn however, said United Airlines staff were to meet at Sydney airport and in Melbourne.
“They will decide what their response is to the announcement, some may walk off the job to attend these meetings,” Mr Flinn said.
“But all of them may decide to walk off the job after the meetings.”
If a strike does go ahead, Mr Flinn said: “Then passengers will be disrupted, yes.”
