United upgrades app with interactive mapping tech
United Airlines wants to make the airport experience a little less stressful for fliers.
The airline has updated its mobile app with a host of improved functions, making transit time more interactive.
The app now has interactive indoor maps for United’s main hub terminals in Chicago O’Hare, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco and Washington Dulles.
It enables users to quickly see nearby airport facilities, such as restaurants, ATMs or restrooms after ‘pinning’ their location on the interactive map.
Based on current location within a terminal, the app can guide a user to the relevant departure gate, giving an estimated walking time.
The tech was developed for United by San Francisco-based start-up LocusLabs.
It is now available to download as an iOS app with an Android version due for release this fall.
"Travelers are accustomed to using maps and navigation apps throughout their daily lives – and that shouldn’t end when they walk into the airport," said Scott Wilson, United vice president of eCommerce and Merchandising.
"These new features of our app will make travel easier and more personal for our customers."
Another welcome addition to the app is the ability to access other last minute flight options and rebook in the event of delays, such as rerouting to alternate airports or adding themselves to a standby list.
United said the app has been downloaded more than 20 million times since launching in November 2013.
