Unlicensed Singapore travel agent jailed
Singapore is continuing to get tough with errant travel agents.
Rohani Harun, 65 was convicted of three charges violating the Travel Agents Act and a fourth charge of criminal breach of trust.
Harun was sentenced to 23 months in prison for operating without a valid licence and for not fulfilling travel bookings worth S$47,940.
"Despite facing financial difficulties, Rohani continued to take on consumer transactions without fulfilling them," said the Singapore Tourism Board, which brought the prosecution.
"STB takes a serious view against those who engage in unlicensed travel agent activities and will not hesitate to take actions to protect consumers’ interests and uphold the reputation of Singapore’s tourism sector," it said.
The offences took place between 2014 and 2016 and mostly involved long haul flight bookings on Singapore Airlines.
The court heard Rohani had previous convictions for criminal breach of trust dating back 15 years.
