UNWTO Ready For Second H1N1 Pandemic

Monday, 06 Oct, 2009 0

Unwto claimed today that it is ready and equipped a the second and possibly stronger autumn wave of the H1N1 pandemic.

The initial affects of ‘Swine Flu’ in Mexico earlier this year devastated Mexican tourism and crippled tourism businesses in the area. The epedemic of the disease has now been classified as a pandemic and it is expected that there will be a stronger global wave of the disease in the autumn.

Unwto says that it has been extremely active in engaging with the problem which could have unimaginable effects for the global tourism industry. Amongst the draconian measures that governments could take are border closures that have been fiercly opposed by the organisation.

It is felt that the MICE industry and business travel in general,  both high yield sectors of the industry will be particularly affected by the potential pandemic. The cruise industry will also be particularly affected.

Unwto has initiated a number of measures to inform and protect the tourism industry.

Amongst the measures that the Unwto has taken is the establishment of the SOS.travel website which offers a comprehensive intetactive resource for the global travel and tourism industry.

SOS.travel is envisaged by UNWTO as an online one-stop-shop where users can access the latest critical information and communication tools in anticipation of, or in response to, natural and man-made crises with potential impacts on tourism.

The system aims to support crisis preparedness in the tourism sector and assist in rapid recovery from crisis situations. SOS.travel also serves as a valuable resource for travellers by providing in one place the tools and information they need in order to make informed decisions about their own safety and security, and to obtain assistance in case of an emergency.
