US bill could see 70,000 pilots carry guns
Commercial airline pilots moved a step closer to carrying guns on flights after the US House approved its version of the bill.
It is now up to the Senate to pass judgement on the issue, but so far it has not been scheduled for a vote.
Senator Robert Smith originally sponsored the bill, “Arming Pilots Against Terrorism and Cabin Defense Act”, and the House voted 310 to 113 in favour.
However, the House bill includes an amendment that would allow practically all 70,000 commercial pilots to carry firearms, provided they undergo certain background checks and training beforehand.
The House bill originally would have allowed only 2% of pilots, some 1,400, to carry guns.
Airline pilots are generally in favour of the legislation but the Bush administration has reservations. It contends the combination of reinforced cockpit doors and the presence of undercover sky marshals negates the need to arm pilots.
