US gets ready for ‘Frankenstorm’
New York, Boston and Washington are preparing for the arrival of ‘Frankenstorm’ early next week as forecasters predict that Hurricane Sandy will transform into a dangerous hybrid system and hit the northeast.
The US media has come up with the name for the weather system because it is expected to become a combination of a tropical storm and a winter storm, potentially wreaking havoc along the East Coast around Halloween.
According to the New York Times, the city has already activated its coastal storm plan and opened its Office of Emergency Management situation room.
Hurricane Sandy has weakened to a category one but is forecast to remain a hurricane for the next two days.
It has already caused mayhem in Cuba, Haiti and Jamaica and killed at least 21 people.
It is expected to generate another day of stormy weather across South Florida, but the state is likely to avoid the kind of damage that Sandy has left in its path elsewhere.
