Vancouver airport workers threaten Labor Day weekend strike
Flights to Vancouver over the Labor Day weekend may be delayed or cancelled if a threatened strike by 350 unionized airport workers goes ahead this Friday.
The Public Service Alliance of Canada has issued a 72-hour strike notice warning the public of a planned job action on the weekend devoted to workers.
"We felt we had no choice," said union representative Bob Jackson in a news release.
More than 80% of the members of the Union of Canadian Transportation Employees have voted in favor of a strike. Their current contract expired December 31, 2012.
The union members provide emergency response, customer care, passenger loading, runway maintenance and lighting, and general maintenance and administration services at the airport.
The airport’s website says it "remains committed to reaching a negotiated settlement that is fair for both parties," and it will remain open even if the strike goes ahead.
