Vancouver Convention Centre first for top LEED ranking
The Vancouver Convention Centre’s new West building has been awarded LEED Platinum certification by the Canada Green Building Council, making it the first convention center in the world to get that status.
The award is the highest level of LEED certification.
"From the very beginning of the expansion project, our goal was to create a building that is not only functional and beautiful, but also environmentally sustainable in every way, bringing urban ecology into the downtown core," said Vancouver Convention Centre General Manager Ken Cretney.
Among its many green features, the expanded Vancouver Convention Centre’s sustainable design includes a six-acre "living" roof — Canada’s largest — a sophisticated water recovery system, a facility-wide recycling program, a restored marine habitat that’s been built into the West building’s foundation, and a seawater heating and cooling system.
