The Victorian Government has pledged $72.7 million over four years for major events, business events, and marketing Melbourne and Victoria.

“This funding will help Victorian tourism and business events continue to grow,” Minister for Tourism and Major Events, John Pandazopoulos, said.

Mr Pandazopoulos said tourism had grown to be worth $10.9 billion to the State’s economy.

“We want to keep driving that growth and see the industry reach forecasts of becoming an $18 billion tourism industry by 2014,” he said.

The funding pledge in the state budget includes an extra $52.2 million over four years to maintain and build Victoria’s major events calendar.

Mr Pandazopoulos said Victoria had the busiest major events calendar of any Australian city this year and that those events provided an economic benefit to the state of over $1 billion per year.

The budget funding also included $12.4 million over four years to a new tourism campaign promoting Melbourne and Victoria.
