Victorian $1m Games anti-terror network announced
The Victorian Government today announced a special Melbourne 2006 telecommunications network for security agencies and organisers in case of terrorists strikes during the Commonwealth Games.
Included in the network is an exclusive mobile network costing up to $1m, designed to replace Telstra’s network should it crash because of pressure during a security scare.
While for security reasons, no further information is available, Telstra is working with the Victorian state government to make sure network security issues are addressed for the Games.
2006 Commonwealth Games Minister Justin Madden’s spokesman confirmed in the Age today that Victoria’s communications capabilities were being factored into Games security preparations.
The Age also said that Telstra’s existing mobile network would be boosted before the Games in March, with mobile base stations set up around the city.
The strategy may well have been put in place as a result of experience during the London bombings in July, when mobile networks were out action for approximately two hours as priority was given to emergency calls.
