Virgin Australia breaks sales record as half-price flight scheme goes live
Australia’s subsidised half-price flight campaign has led to the busiest day of sales for 20 years at Virgin Australia. The airline says it sold 71,000 tickets in 24 hours after the half-price flight deal opened for sales. It is part of the federal government’s $1.2 billion stimulus package.
Sydney and Melbourne to Gold Coast were among the most popular routes although several routes not included in the half-price ticket scheme also sold well.
"The overwhelming response from Australians demonstrates loud and clear that they are ready to get back in the air and travel and are a positive sign for the aviation and tourism sectors," the airline said.
A total of about 800,000 half-price economy tickets are up for grabs until the end of July 2021.
