Virgin to launch mile-high social network
Virgin America said it will launch an in-flight social network for passengers using its GoGo Wi-Fi service by the end of February.
The carrier is teaming up with geo-location app Here on Biz to allow flyers to search and connect with fellow passengers on Virgin flights or in the airport terminal.
Travelers can download the free iOS app and use an existing social media profile such as LinkedIn, Facebook or Twitter.
It offers the opportunity to connect with other flyers in real time to discuss business, an upcoming conference or even share a taxi ride from the airport.
Virgin says its aim is to allow passengers to "take advantage of downtime in-flight to build or renew their professional connections."
For flyers who like to tweet from their seat at 30,000 feet, Virgin is launching a Twitter promotion to celebrate the launch.
Up for grabs are weekly prizes of complimentary Gogo WiFi passes and a top prize of Virgin America Elevate Gold status along with free business class tickets.
