Visitors to South Africa warned about student protests
The Foreign Office is advising visitors to South Africa to be aware of student protests taking place across the country.
The protests are being staged at the parliamentary buildings in Cape Town and across university cities in South Africa.
Protests in Cape Town have led to clashes with police. According to local reports, police fired stun grenades as protestors tried to force their way into the parliament.
"You should monitor the local media and avoid all demonstrations, rallies and large gatherings," said the FCO in updated travel advice today.
The protests are being staged in opposition to a 10%-12% hike in tuition fees, which students say may exclude poorer black students.
