Volcanic eruption hits Caribbean
Flights cancelled as dust and ash blanket Montserrat and its neighbours
Flights around parts of the Caribbean have this morning been cancelled following a volcanic eruption of the island of Montserrat.
Part of the island’s volcanic peak, the Soufiere Hills volcano, collapsed on Saturday, and much of the island has been blanketed in dust and ash, with many trees and other vegetation being damaged by the eruption. While there has been no damage reported on surrounding islands, the Dutch territory of St Maarten is said to have been blanketed in ash that was thrown some 40,000 feet into the air by the eruption.
Other islands nearby, and therefore more likely to be affected, include Saint Kitts, Nevis and Anguilla. At least five carriers including Continental Airlines and Air France are reported to have cancelled flights to St Maarten. Observers have warned that there is still a chance of the volcano erupting again in coming days.
