Volcano erupts close to tourist town
A volcano has erupted close to a tourist town in southern Chile, sending a thick plume of smoke and ash several miles into the sky.
It’s the first time that Calbuco has erupted since 1961 and locals said it happened without warning.
The eruption happened close to the tourist town of Puerto Varas, about 600 miles south of the capital Santiago.
About 1,500 people have been evacuated from within 20 kilometres of the volcano.
