Warning about self-catering scam
A holiday scam is targeting holidaymakers looking for self-catering options.
Fraudsters are producing stylish ads and websites of properties but customers are finding after booking accommodation and buying flights, the property is already occupied.
Holiday rentals company CLC Leisure said that the scam has become increasingly sophisticated and there are a number of horror stories from holidaymakers.
Laurence Hicks, director of CLC said: "They even have telephone numbers that you can call for information and verification.
"The fact is however that photos and details have been copied, probably from an estate agents website, the telephone number is disposable and there is no property for rent.
"Whilst this type of scam mostly involves properties in the US, it is becoming increasingly prevalent in Europe, including the UK."
Hicks advised that holidaymakers should preferably book via a reputable agent or operator that offers ABTA and ATOL protection.
He added, "Only pay by credit card so that there is a chance of recouping your money in the event of something going wrong.
"If you suspect anything dodgy, report it to your local trading standards officer or the police. And remember the maxim – if it seems too good to be true it probably is."
