Concorde diverted due to heat while Lufthansa flight hit by severe turbulence
Concorde was forced to detour into Canada on its journey to New York yesterday – because the hot weather meant it needed more fuel than normal. The BA service touched down to refuel in Gander, Canada, adding some 90 minutes to the standard journey time of three hours and 20 minutes.
A spokesman for BA said: “When it gets this hot Concorde has to carry more fuel because the air it is travelling through is of higher pressure. It is unusual, but this is certainly not the first time this has happened because of the hot weather.”
Meanwhile, 30 passengers aboard a Lufthansa flight were injured after the plane experienced serious turbulence over the Atlantic Ocean. At least 10 people were taken to hospital when the flight, from Frankfurt, arrived in Houston. There were 250 people on board and many of the injuries are believed to have been caused by baggage being thrown around the cabin.
