WestJet planning new no frills airline

Monday, 21 Apr, 2017 0

WestJet Airlines plans to launch a new ultra low cost airline unit.

It will launch this year as a standalone no-frills, low-cost option

"Our new airline will provide Canadians a pro-competitive, cheap and cheerful flying experience from a company with a proven track record," said CEO Gregg Saretsky.

That means the wholesale unbundling of services and products, but gave no details of planned routes or pricing.

It will however use at least 10 ‘high density’ Boeing 737 aircraft.

Before it gets off the ground Westjet will need to negotiate contracts with pilots and obtain necessary approvals but expects to take off before the end of the year.

"We have built WestJet from its low-cost, regional roots into a renowned, international airline with service to 21 countries and today it’s all about disrupting at the price-sensitive end of the market," said WestJet co-founder Clive Beddoe.

"Launching a ULCC will broaden WestJet’s growth opportunities and open new market segments by offering more choice to those Canadians looking for lower fares."
