Worst ever month for reliable air travel
New figures show that June was officially the worst on record for reliable air travel in Australia.
The volcanic ash cloud that spread across Australia and New Zealand from Chile twice in 10 days was largely responsible for 2,262 flights being cancelled.
Among domestic airlines, Qantas axed the most flights, at 595.
Tiger, in proportional terms, had the highest rate of cancellations, equating to 16.5 percent of its scheduled services, almost three times that of its nearest competitor.
“The cancellation rate is the worst recorded since this [statistical] collection began,” the government’s Bureau of Infrastructure,
Transport and Regional Economics said in its monthly report.
Adelaide, Melbourne and Tasmanian airports were most impacted by the cancellations.
