Young Australians say travellers make better employees

According to a recent online poll conducted by Contiki Holidays, young Australians believe that people who have travelled make better employees.

Conducted in August, an online poll, Travel and Careers, hosted on http://www.contiki.com/ offered an insight into the importance and impact of travel on the lives and career aspirations of 654 travellers.

Key findings from the Travel and Careers poll include: –

** 88% of respondents believe the big overseas trip is a rite of passage for young Australians.

** 54% of participants feel you can fulfil travel dreams while having a full-time career.

** 64% of people would leave their full time career to travel extensively, while 21% would not.

** 73% of those who responded to the poll felt that those who had travelled made better employees.

For generations past the one-off trip of a lifetime was a rite of passage, and while the once in a lifetime trend of overseas travel may have changed for Gen Y and Gen X as they often take numerous holidays, the importance of travel has not diminished.

88 per cent of those who participated in the poll said they thought that the big OS trip was still a rite of passage for young Australians.

When questioning the impact of travel on careers the results were interesting, with when it came to pursuing travel dreams 55 per cent of respondents said they believed they could fulfil travel aspirations while having a full time job, while 34 per cent said they couldn’t.

However, while over half of those who polled their thoughts felt they could have a career and travel, 65 per cent of people said they would quit their full time job in order to have the opportunity to travel extensively.

The same number of respondents (65 per cent) said that working overseas, even if it is outside your chosen career path will help, rather than hinder, job futures.

Finally, when asked whether people who have travelled make better employees, 73 per cent of those who participated answered yes.

So, young people believe those with the travel bug will make employers happier…something that future employers may well like to keep in mind next time they’re hiring someone between 18 and 35.

The Travel and Careers poll ran throughout August and was answered by 654 people visiting the Contiki website.
