Qatar Airways inaugurated earlier this week three weekly non-stop flights between Hamad International Airport in Doha and Red Sea International Airport (RSI) in Saudi Arabia.

The airport, operated by daa International, becomes the 12th destination served by Qatar Airways in the Kingdom. Qatar Airways’ Saudi network already includes Abha, AlUla, Dammam, Jeddah, Medina, NEOM, Qassim, Riyadh, Tabuk, Taif, and Yanbu. The new route underscores Qatar Airways’ commitment to the Saudi market and its ongoing efforts to strengthen regional connectivity.

The service also integrates RSI into Qatar Airways’ global network of more than 170 destinations across six continents—connecting travelers from Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Europe to Saudi Arabia’s western coast via Doha.

Qatar Airways Group CEO Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer said the new route reflects the airline’s long-term vision: “ We are proud to expand our global network with the launch of service to The Red Sea. Our growing presence in the Kingdom highlights the importance of the Saudi market and the close relationship between our two countries. This route offers travelers seamless, world-class access to one of the Middle East’s most exciting new destinations.”

Opening the Red Sea to the world

Red Sea Global Group CEO John Pagano described the partnership as a milestone for the destination: “Welcoming Qatar Airways to Red Sea International Airport is a major step in connecting more travelers to The Red Sea. With Shura Island now open and our second destination, AMAALA, set to welcome guests soon, this enhanced international connectivity will allow visitors to experience Saudi Arabia’s culture, hospitality, and breathtaking natural landscapes.”

Located between Umluj and Al Wajh on Saudi Arabia’s west coast, The Red Sea destination spans more than 90 pristine islands, coral reefs, deserts, and volcanic landscapes.

Currently home to six luxury resorts, the region’s centerpiece—Shura Island—opened in 2025 and will soon feature 11 high-end resorts, a golf course, marina, and upscale retail and dining options.

Qatar Airways will add three more flights to Manchester from 4 June 2025, to meet increasing demand for the summer season. The route will be served by carrier’s fleet of Airbus A350-1000s and Boeing 787-9s. The airline has been serving Manchester since 2003 and remains a key city in Qatar Airways’ UK network. Qatar Airways Chief Commercial Officer, Thierry Antinori, said: “Qatar Airways’ increase in flights to Manchester comes as part of enhancing connectivity from all over the world to the Northwest.” “With these incremental flights to Manchester, we are also proud to facilitate connectivity and capacity between UK and Australia – two significant markets for global travel.” The flights will depart every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday Bookings for Manchester can be made at: qatarairways.com or through the airline’s mobile app.  

Qatar Airways will soon start rolling out free Starlink in-flight Wi-Fi. Three Boeing 777-300 aircraft will first receive Starlink connectivity by the fourth quarter of this year. The entire modern fleet is being upgraded with Starlink and should be completed within the next two years Passengers can enjoy complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi of up to 500 Megabits per second per plane. It was announced at the Aircraft Interior Expo at Hamburg, Germany. Complementary connectivity will be available with a simple ‘one-click-access’ to enjoy internet-based services such as video streaming and web-browsing. Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, said: “This exciting collaboration will elevate the passenger experience to new heights.” It is first service of its kind in the MENA region. Starlink Engineering Vice President at SpaceX, Mike Nicolls, said: “High-speed, low-latency internet is the future of aviation connectivity, and we’re excited to work with Qatar Airways to start flying Starlink on their fleet.”

Twelve people heading to Dublin were injured after another severe turbulence incident. It happened aboard a Qatar Airways flight on Sunday after the plane was hit with turbulence on its way to Dublin, airport officials announced. The flight from Doha landed at Dublin and was met by emergency services. Dublin Airport posted on X that six passengers and six crew members were injured. Eight of the twelve injured were taken to hospital. Qatar Airways flight QR017 suffered turbulence as it flew over Turkey. Last week a British man died during a severe turbulence incident on a Singapore Airlines flight from London to Singapore Changi Airport. US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg says turbulence incidents are up by about 15%.

Qatar Airways and Aer Lingus have launched a new airline codeshare partnership. The codeshare pact is now live and gives customers greater access to more destinations across the UK and Ireland. It also offers seamless one-stop travel globally to Africa, Asia, Australia, the Middle East and New Zealand. Qatar Airways will add its code on flights operated by Aer Lingus and Aer Lingus Regional. Once fully implemented, Qatar Airways will have codeshare coverage with all IAG carriers, including British Airways, Iberia, Vueling, and Aer Lingus. This new airline codeshare will enable connections between Qatar Airways and Aer Lingus flights through Dublin, London, and Manchester. Customers will be able to travel between Irish and UK destinations including Aberdeen, Belfast, Cork, and Glasgow. There are also codeshare connections via Qatar Airways’ global network through its Doha hub. Qatar Airways CCO, Thierry Antinori, said: “Customers will benefit from a wider choice of global destinations. The move also builds on our long-term strategic relationship with IAG as we expand our codeshare coverage even further.” This latest tie-up follows the strategic joint business alliance between Qatar Airways, British Airways and Iberia.

Qatar Airways will resume direct Lisbon, Portugal flights this summer. Four times a week flights will be served on Boeing B787-8 aircraft beginning 6 June 2024. Qatar Airways Chief Commercial Officer, Thierry Antinori, said: “Passengers can now enjoy very efficient ways to travel between Qatar and Portugal, as well as connect to Asia, Africa and the Middle East." Travellers can avail of a stopover package to Qatar, offered by Discover Qatar. It offers various packages from standard accommodations to luxury all-inclusive resorts. All stopover packages include 24-hour check-in facilities plus add-on options including transfers and tours and experiences. Qatar Airways Privilege Club members will collect Avios on flights and can pay for flights with a combination of cash and Avios or Avios Max.

Package include return flights and transfers, hotel accommodation, F1 Paddock Club or Grandstand race tickets for all global races (excluding Qatar) bookable at: qatarairways.com/f1. Qatar Airways Holidays SVP, Steven Reynolds said: “We have worked hard to create these affordable packages that offer unbeatable value and look forward to helping fans travel to races globally.” The F! fan packages include flexibly priced options for select race destinations. This year, fans can enjoy guided track tours, pit lane walks and more with the F1 Paddock Club packages. Plus, Qatar Airways Privilege Club members can collect Avios and Qpoints on all fan packages, accumulating rewards to use towards future travel and experiences.

Qatar Airways is boosting Europe flights for 2024 with a new destination and bringing back an old favourite. The Europe flight network expansion sees new Hamburg flights and the return of flights to Venice for next summer. Qatar Airways adds the new destination of Hamburg, Germany in July. “We are delighted to present our passengers with new and exciting travel opportunities for 2024,” said Group CEO, Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer. The airline offers seven weekly Hamburg flights from 1 July 2024 and the return of Venice flights from Doha will see seven weekly flights starting on 12 June 2024 These flights come on the back of recent expansion to the Qatar Airways winter schedule which includes increased flight frequencies to key leisure destinations. These include Amsterdam, Bangkok, Barcelona and Miami. Qatar Airways’ Venice and Hamburg flights are now open for booking.

Title Sponsor Qatar Airways has rolled out MotoGP travel packages for the upcoming Qatar Airways Grand Prix of Qatar. Qatar Airways Holidays packages include return flights, hotel and race tickets with various fan experiences. The race takes place from 17-19 November 2023. Fans can choose from the Main Grandstand Qatar MotoGP Experience and the Qatar Airways MotoGP VIP Village experience. Privilege Club members can collect Avios on travel packages, while members from select countries can use cash + Avios to book packages. Discover Qatar is currently offering tickets to the Main Grandstand for all three race days. Qatar Airways has inked a deal with Shell to source 3,000 metric tonnes of neat Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) at Amsterdam Schiphol airport. With its existing contract with Shell at Schipol, Qatar Airways will power at least a 5% SAF blend over the contract period for 2023-2024. The agreement is part of a wider effort initiated by the oneworld alliance. Oneworld has set a target of using sustainable aviation fuel for 10% of combined fuel volumes by 2030. Qatar Airways is the first carrier in the Middle East and Africa to procure a large SAF amount in Europe beyond government mandates. Qatar Airways Group CEO, Akbar Al Baker, said: “We remain steadfast in our ambitious target of 10% SAF use by 2030 and this announcement establishes another landmark.” Qatar Airways also operates a carbon credits scheme. It currently invests in carbon credit projects that generate renewable energy.
