5G rollout near airports delayed over airline concerns
AT&T and Verizon agreed to delay activating their 5G networks due to airline safety concerns.
US airlines had warned of a ‘catastrophic disruption’ if the 5G rollout went ahead.
However, several international airlines suspended or revised their US flights.
Boeing announced advisories for all airlines operating Boeing 777 aircraft as 5G could interfere with Boeing 777 navigation equipment.
Delta Air Lines said it was still ‘planning for the possibility of weather-related cancellations caused by the deployment of new 5G service in the vicinity of dozens of US airports.’
"We are launching our advanced 5G services everywhere else as planned with the temporary exception of this limited number of towers," AT&T said, referring to towers located near airports.
Verizon also said it has ‘voluntarily decided to limit our 5G network around airports.’
