Air New Zealand and Virgin Australia will team up together to put on extra weekend flights to Queenstown during the 2017 ski season.

The extra trans-Tasman flights will operate to and from Brisbane by Virgin and from Sydney served by Air NZ.

The flights will operate on weekends, out Friday from Australia and returning Sunday from Queenstown.

"As the popularity of Queenstown grows, particularly during the ski season, we are excited to be offering even more flexible scheduling options for our guests with these new night time Ski Shuttle services," said VA group executive John Thomas.

"Our new night flights from Queenstown to Brisbane enable Virgin Australia guests to enjoy a full day of skiing or snowboarding before travelling home."

The flights are still awaiting approval and go on sale from today December 14.

NZ Ski chief executive Paul Anderson said: "It enables those guests who want to ski at Coronet Peak or Remarkables for a weekend, can come in for a weekend for a full two days and not be wasting time during the day which could be good skiing time,"

"We know that at the peak of our season Australians make up 40 to 50% of guests on our mountains."
