AirAsia expanding facial recognition boarding tech

Wednesday, 04 Mar, 2019 0

AirAsia says its biometric boarding pilot programme has been a success and plans to roll it out across airports in Malaysia this year.

The Fast Airport Clearance Experience System (FACES) has been tested at Johor Bahru Senai Airport for the past year.

FACES works at automated boarding gates using facial recognition imagery to enable travellers to board flights without presenting any travel documents.

The airline has refined and improved the system during the pilot programme and will soon be ready for an expanded rollout.

"Airports are typically the worst part of flying. FACES marks our latest effort to make the on-ground experience more seamless by using cutting edge biometric technology to authenticate guests," said group CEO Tony Fernandes.

"With FACES, your face is your passport, making it a breeze to clear the gate and board your flight."

Senai Airport was also the first location in Malaysia for AirAsia’s self-service baggage check-in system.
