Airfare hikes continue
There were no surprises when American Airlines raised their roundtrip fares by $10: Continental, Delta, Northwest, United and US promptly matched them.
Carriers are citing higher fuel costs within the past few weeks as reasons for the increases, which are expected to continue through the summer.
Tom Parsons, CEO of discount travel site and airfare monitor Bestfares.com, said in a statement the fare increase on leisure tickets is the fifth of the year.
“Add that to the 12 hikes that occurred in 2005, and this makes a grand total of 17 airfare hikes since January of 2005 on American routes not served by low-cost airlines,” he said.
Low-cost airlines are also raising their fares, however.
