Airline e-mails up in the air

Are US flyers looking at mid-flight e-mail and Web surfing?

Could be.

The Federal Communications Commission recently announced that in May there would be an auction of airwaves to allow internet access during flights.

The move would have to be approved by the Federal Aviation Administration.

So far, only international travelers can log on during flights.

El Al, Lufthansa and Singapore Airlines offer service on flights leaving Chicago, Washington and New York, reported the Miami Herald.

Polls show airline passengers generally don’t favor cell phones during flights, but some observers say they would welcome e-mail capabilities —  particularly if the price was acceptable.

International fliers currently pay anywhere from $15 to $30 for the service.
